Not cut out for online business? - Who says?!

Not cut out for online business? – Who says?!

It’s a loaded question to ask yourself if you are cut out for online business

Have you thought about starting an online business? But haven’t taken action because a voice tells you that you’re ‘not cut out for it’? Then take a moment to consider four common causes of that limiting belief.

I just haven’t got what it takes

The minimum resources needed for setting up an online business are not a lot. As shared in one of my previous posts How to start an online business with little or no money the basic resources needed for online marketing are a Website builder, Domain name, and Domain hosting. That’s the minimum of what it takes to get into business online. That’s all.

But people who think that they don’t have what it takes, make it more complicated than it needs to be. And that is something that most of us get caught up on. Certainly, there are many other skills that need to be developed along the way. This includes learning how to reach your audience. But in terms of getting started it is important to just focus on the most basic requirements.

I have tried and failed before

If this is your experience then it is a common reaction to assume that you are not cut out for online business. But just as much, the experience of failure actually puts you closer to your success. The pathway to lasting success is always built on multiple failures.

No human ever became interesting by not failing. The more you fail and recover and improve, the better you are as a person.

Chris Hardwick

Experiencing failure itself is not the obstacle of your success. The act of failure, and more so the label of failure, is not what defines you. The only thing that defines you in the end is how you see yourself and respond to your situation.

Cut out for online business?

If you have failed in trying to build an online business before there will be a gold mine of lessons from that experience that you can benefit from.

That’s why it’s helpful to hook up with an online business-building community. Or at least connect up with a network of accountability partners. Such connections can be an invaluable sounding wall to bounce ideas off and gain insights into solutions for problems encountered. They can also offer a healthy reality check through offering constructive criticism to help you in your growth or help clear up any unfounded negative perspectives that you had of yourself.

There is too much competition

The size and scale of online business certainly makes it look like a crowded space. There are more than 1.5 billion websites in total. Advertising is everywhere across the internet. And moreover there are so many bigger businesses out there that will be able to easily dominate the market.

It all depends on where you choose to look. By all measurements more than 60% of the world’s population is on the internet – and growing. The size of the online market means connecting with people who will value your message becomes an increasingly likely outcome. Depending on what line of online business you choose to develop the number of customers that you will need to engage may not even be that much.

There’s too much risk in online marketing

The fact is, in online marketing, financial risks are a lot less than for building a traditional brick and mortar business. Certainly there are reduced risks given the lack of overhead expenses, establishment costs are much lower, and there is no need to lease out office space.

In fact because the upfront outlays are small by comparison it is possible to build a successful online business as a side hustle alongside your regular job. The only risk is whether you choose to quit before applying enough time and effort to allow your online business to succeed.

As stated at the beginning of this post the premise of the title question is a loaded one. There is an underlying assumption that to be cut out for creating an online business you need to match the exact type of person that is defined to be someone who is successful at online business.
