There’s no secret to setting smart goals for online business – just simple application
Many people hold themselves back from starting an online business because they think that they are not smart enough. But at it’s foundation the process for setting S.M.A.R.T. goals for online business is straight forward.
In searching up the acronym for the S.M.A.R.T. method you are likely to come across a number of variations. But I’ll stick with a version that seems to hold the most consensus.
In setting a goal for building an online business, most importantly it should be highly focused and specific. In any field a goal that lacks focus does not have enough clarity to bring it within reach.
Secondly, it’s important that an online business goal be measurable. Building an online business is in any case an endeavour that requires months and even years of effort. So it helps to follow a steps and guidlines that will help you progress from week to week in taking action for online business. A good way to measure your progress in such a project is by following the kind of structure outlined in The Twelve Week Year.
Making sure that your online business development goals are achievable is important to keep them within reach. There are a couple of reasons for this. If your goal is set too high then disappointment at not meeting expectations can lead to discouragement. That will stop you from persisting until you succeed. From another point if your goal for launching and growing your online business is based on carrying an excessive financial investment that is beyond your ability to sustain then it can lead to burnout, of cash and emotion.
Other versions of this use the R to stand for ‘Realistic’. But I feel that being a realistic goal is already covered in the area of being achievable. But another take on the description of setting realistic goals is to make them a reality. By focusing on getting RESULTS that will make your goal a reality is a sure way to succeed. After all a goal is nothing if it does not lift performance and deliver results.
By giving your online business development goal/s a deadline helps bring greater focus and intentionality to making goal/s a reality. The Pareto principle comes into application on this point. For most people productivity in taking actions towards reaching a goal increases exponentially the closer a project deadline gets. This is certainly what happens for most students that get stuck into cramming for exams.
But getting back to the attitude of not being smart enough for building an online business; there is no set level of academic ability or IQ level that you need to be successful at online business. In fact in my experience I have learnt that formal education can actually limit your ability to be open minded enough to get stuck into taking action for launching an online business.
From what I have observed through my own experience and that of other online business developers is that determination is a far more valuable skill to have in this matter.
There is an endless amount of content found online that will give you all the information that you need to learn how to set up an online business. Although the volume of info available itself, as noted before, can be overwhelming. And if your reading speed makes you feel that you’re not smart enough for learning how to build an online business then there are plenty of videos and podcasts and audio-books which will give you all the hacks you need to succeed.
So as stated at the beginning of this post, there’s no secret to setting smart goals for building an online business. All it takes is consistent application of the kind of S.M.A.R.T. process outlined above.
